The Story Behind Novel

Novel is the love child of co-owners (not to mention husband and wife!), Rachel and Elliott. They combined their dreams to create a new and welcoming “third space” for the people of Rochester Hills to gather and connect in. Rachel, a self-described “mood reader” is in charge of curating the bookshelves to cover a wide variety of genres, interests, and reading levels. Elliott designs the artisanal sandwich menu, making a new special once a week and using fresh and fun local ingredients to their fullest. Put their special skills together and you get a sandwich shop and bookstore right in the heart of their hometown.

Elliott’s Culinary Background

Elliott May inside Novel: A Book and Sandwich Shop with pastries

Elliott, who makes up one half of the husband-and-wife co-owner duo, has a long and passionate history with food. Starting his journey in the restaurant industry, washing dishes as a kid in his late Uncle Danny May’s café and later attending culinary school, opening his own sandwich shop has been a dream for years. When the downtown location in Rochester opened up, he and Rachel, the book curator for the store, knew it was time to take the chance.

Where Do We Get Our Ingredients?

Elliott goes to special lengths to make sure that the majority of the ingredients are locally sourced. As a small business owner himself, he understands the importance of supporting your neighbors—especially when it comes to finding the freshest and tastiest elements for his creative sandwich recipes! The various types of bread are ordered from CRUST, honey is sourced from Bizzy Buzz, and gourmet cheese is delivered by The Cheese Lady. When you bite into a sandwich at Novel, you can enjoy it even more knowing you’re supporting your town.
