How Novel Came to Be
When the idea to open an indie bookstore first came about, it was never going to be just another business on Main Street. Co-owners Rachel and Elliot wanted it to be a cozy and comfortable “third space” where anyone feels welcome to stop by, browse the shelves, grab a bite to eat off the menu, and, most importantly, grow a community. It doesn’t matter whether you’re meeting for book club, chatting with a stranger, or bringing your kids to a Storytime event—it can all happen at this independent bookstore.

When you shop at indie bookstores, you can rest assured that your money goes right back into the neighborhood. The majority of independent bookstores, including Novel, are typically owned by members of the community, meaning there’s a good chance they care about creating local jobs, supporting nearby businesses, and utilizing local services whenever possible.
Whether you’re stocking up on baby books for your expecting friend or eagerly awaiting the latest romantasy book in your favorite series, indie bookstores have it all. Get to Know the Family Behind Novel
Elliot and Rachel are more than co-owners of Novel—they’re also husband and wife! Rachel, a lifelong booklover, is the main curator of the book selection, working hard to stock the shelves with all-time favorites, new finds, popular titles, and recommendations from her family, friends, and trusted staff. Working mainly behind the counter, Elliot harnesses his passion for delicious bites to create an artisanal sandwich menu that is mouthwateringly delicious!
The two live in Rochester Hills with their three beautiful kiddos. After years of dreaming up this indie bookstore and sandwich shop, they’re overjoyed to finally be a part of the downtown Rochester community.
