Why We Love Book Clubs

It’s easy to write off reading as a solo hobby, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Book clubs are an age-old tradition, and joining one gives you an opportunity to discuss your thoughts, foster connections with like-minded readers, and build community. When there are people from all walks of life in your club, you’ll hear a wide range of perspectives on the content, providing you with more insight and understanding. If you love literature, attending or founding a club is a must.

 

Looking for a Local Place to Host Your Book Club?

Though many people host book clubs in their own homes, nothing sets the tone quite like being surrounded by curated bookshelves. If you live near Rochester, MI, and want to support a local business during your meeting, Novel is the place for you. The owners, Rachel and Elliott, created their indie bookstore to be a third space, and clubs like these are a huge part of that idea. 

Any and all book clubs are welcome to gather during our regular business hours. All seating is first come, first served, so plan to get there early to scope out the best seats in the house! Spread out in the “living room” and enjoy the plush couches or push tables together—our space is your space.

 

Hosting Your Book Club at Novel

If you’re worried about timing and space, please stop by Novel and speak to Elliott (he’s usually there 11 am – 3 pm on weekdays). Usually, the best time is at 11 am, right when we open, so you can set up at a specific space. 

If you’re not worried about serving a meal, you can also host your book club at Novel during our retail hours (check out our current hours at the bottom of this page).

 

Can You Rent Out Novel?

We are currently not renting the space out.

 

What Are the Food and Beverage Options at Novel?

Novel is more than an indie bookstore—it’s also a sandwich shop. Since we have a full (and delicious, might we add) sandwich menu and café to order from, we do not allow customers to bring in their own meals or alcoholic beverages. However, cake and other celebratory treats are more than welcome!

If you’re gathering during the day, try out one of our handcrafted sandwiches or enjoy a pastry or two. If you’re renting the space out before or after hours, you have the option for the kitchen to remain open, which will be discussed when you make your reservation. Getting to dine while discussing your chosen book elevates the whole book club experience, and who wouldn’t want that?
